Uroš Uščebrka (Belgrade, 1971) is a Serbian sculptor, professor, and researcher whose practice encompasses sculpture, urban interventions, and public art. He graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade and earned a master’s degree in Architectural Heritage Restoration from Universidad Veracruz in Mexico, where he currently teaches. He has exhibited internationally, realized numerous public art projects, and received several international awards for sculpture and public art. His works are included in the Contemporary Sculpture Collection of the National Museum of Serbia, and he is featured in Lily Kassner’s Dictionary of 20th-Century Mexican Sculptors.
In the monumental ten-piece installation Only Hugs left alive, Uroš Uščebrka creates an open, organic form of trees that have been cut down, that does not impose a single meaning, but instead invites a quiet, personal remembrance through its rhythm and the possibility of a direct encounter. As a kind of memorial dedicated to the victims of the ‘Vladislav Ribnikar’ Primary School tragedy, the work consciously abstains from depicting the disaster; instead of an image of loss, it offers a space of closeness, touch, and shared presence. – Verica Nemet, art historian
