Biography

Robert Gundolf

He was born in 1952 in Tyrol. He studied biology in Innsbruck, followed by trips to Asia. Later he moved to Vienna, where today he lives and works in the ceramic workshop “WUK”. In principle, his works are created in a free construction without a potter’s wheel, he is not interested in geometric perfection, but a natural, therefore imperfect approach to geometric form. The slow process of construction creates an intellectual space where memories, images and myths have time to flow into the work. In this respect, objects often tell stories. Robert hematizes human arrogance and criticizes civilization with subtle wit. He questions man’s relationship with nature and calmly observes that nature is stronger.
He has been engaged in sculpture intensively for ten years. In his work, he combines biology and art. And he says: “Biology is an exact science, and sculpture, like any other art, strives for abstraction, but all as a part of life.” All this permeates each other, complements each other and creates unity”.
