Milorad Damnjanović

Serbia

Biography

He received his artistic education at the Belgrade Academy during the fifties, when the sculpture class was held by Sreten Stojanović, a prominent representative of realistic figuration. Damjanović, who has been living in the USA for a long time, today stylizes the figure and thus reaches separate plastic values. His armourers and knights are, in fact, simplified figurines, and Damjanović brings them closer to the medium of terracotta by taking the shape of a bowl, that traditional ceramic product, as the basis of the form. Of course, such indications can only be established associatively. What is important about these sculptures is that they are defined as a compact, elongated mass that can be penetrated through cuts and openings, or from which excitingly emerge applications that dynamize the composition of the form. – Sava Stepanov, art critic (Terra 1988)
